Are you frustrated by the housing crisis in Kingston? Then join us for this free storytelling performance, and hear from people directly impacted by the issues.
The prevailing stories about housing insecurity and homelessness are rooted in misconceptions and stereotypes and often present those in poverty or in a housing crisis as “other.” Join TMI Project for The Housing Stories, a true storytelling performance featuring personal narratives from local community members who have experienced housing insecurity or homelessness that is designed to elicit compassion, human connection, and to spur audiences to take action for positive social change. The performance will be followed by a Q & A with local community leaders.
This event will include a screening of Housing: A Human Right. This collaborative film between Rise Up Kingston and Survival Media Agency amplifies the stories of two Rise Up Members, Yolanda Knox and Freedom Walker. Their stories are emblematic of the struggle of black, brown, and low-income people to secure stable and healthy housing. The film debuted at the 2019 O+ Festival, and was sponsored by RUPCO, Radio Kingston, and Hudsy.
On-view in the Lobby:
Last Night For Dinner: This series originally exhibited at the idea garden in July 2019. Last Night For Dinner is a way for individuals invisible in society to have their voices heard through an art project. People currently experiencing housing insecurity created the work on placemats, a simple ornament most people take for granted. Presented by Rise Up Kingston and FreedomWalker Dickerson.
The Housing Stories is presented in partnership with Rise Up Kingston and RUPCO, and Radio Kingston.
